They say it takes a village to raise a child. Nobody knows this better than Moses. Next we discuss Mama Jochebed. Her courage, coupled with compassion and wisdom of her "village," led to the leadership of Moses, and the biblical chain of events as we know them.
In Exodus Pharaoh orders the midwives to kill any Hebrew baby boys. Jochebed gives birth to her son, Moses 💙, and keeps him hidden for three months. She then places him in a waterproof papyrus basket 🧺 and sends him along the reeds in the Nile to spare him from murder.
📚 "His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.” 📚
There is so much to say! We could hit on how adoption saves lives! 👶 We could discuss the bravery of his sister, who walked alongside him to be his second Mama - full of beautiful wisdom. We could talk about whether Pharaoh's daughter knew that Moses would have died without her, and how far her compassion went!
Jochebed trusted God. She set her sweet baby son off into the unknown, and God brought him back. Can you imagine the relief? The weeping? The fear?
3 women made choices that parents make today. Do we give up control and let God take the reigns? Do we take help from outsiders and swallow pride for the well-being of our kids?
As Jochebed prepared the papyrus basket, what was her prayer? 🙏 If you're part of someone's village, thank you for allowing God to use you. 🙌
